Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility

Developing Technology for Sustainable Water Resources

Facility Study Goals and Objectives

  • Identify research and development opportunities for a Tularosa Basin facility.

  • Identify a regional, national, and international role in desalination.

  • Formulate how Tularosa Basin facility would compliment National water centers.

  • Develop technically and economically sound facility design, and operation and management plans.

  • Complete draft study by June 2002.

  • Complete report to Congress by April 2003.

  • Develop facility design/build plan for July 2003 start.

Mission Statement:

  • Focus on inland desalination research.

  • Evaluate technologies that address environmental issues of inland brine disposal or eliminate brine.

  • Evaluate pretreatment technologies needed for process efficiencies for range of inland waters, varying water chemistries, varying water contaminants, and produced water.

  • Cost-effective use of smaller-scale applications.

  • Application of renewable energy to desalination processes.

  • Compliment capabilities of other national water treatment research centers.

  • Provide educational materials on water treatment research.
