2004 Water Essay Contest Winners

The New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute has announced the winners of the 2004 Water Essay Contest for New Mexico high school students. About 125 students from throughout New Mexico submitted essays to this year's competition. Students submitted essays on the importance of desalination in New Mexico. Essays were judged in two categories: Junior Division for 9 th and 10 th graders and Senior Division for 11 th and 12 th graders. First place in each division won $300 and second place won $200. Several Honorable Mention awards were also given.

Students receiving first and second place will read their essays on September 21, 2004 at a luncheon at the Ruidoso Convention Center in conjunction with the Institute's 49 th Annual New Mexico Water Conference. Students receiving awards are as follows:

Senior Division

First Place: Marcos Garcia – 11 th grade, Belen High School
Second Place: Amanda Merrill – 12 th grade, Mesa Vista High School

Honorable Mention:

    Melissa Austin – 12 th grade, Moriarty High School
    Nicole McShan – 12 th grade, Mesa Vista High School
    Felicia Montoya – 12 th grade, Mesa Vista High School
    Angelina Maestas – 12 th grade, Mesa Vista High School
    Rebecca Gallegos – 12 th grade, Mesa Vista High School
    Vanessa Pena – 12 th grade, Mesa Vista High School

Junior Division

First Place: Shawna Libeau - 10 th grade, Onate High School
Second Place (tie):

  Lexi Hatch – 10 th grade, Animas High School
